Wooftastic Books Interviews Heather Hamilton

WooftasticBooks are pleased to present an interview with Heather Hamilton author of ‘Puppies for Sale’

What inspired you to write `Puppies for Sale

Even though I’ve always been passionate about rescue dogs, I know others do not always feel the same way. Rescue dogs are somehow seen as damaged goods, despite most of them ending up in rescue through no fault of their own. I wondered how I could write a story that would inspire people to think about rescue dogs differently. It was important to entertain people with an exciting thriller, but also have an unusual subject at its heart.

Also, I wanted to include a character with a chronic illness, without using any of the harmful tropes that are often associated with disabled people in fiction. Carly, one of the main characters, has dystonia, a neurological condition.

I grew up watching The A-Team on television and so have always had a fondness for stories about vigilante justice. I love adventures and so went about writing the kind of story I’d like to read.

Give us a brief description of your book.

‘Puppies for Sale’ is set in Edinburgh, my home city. The story centres on Gemma, a tough, streetwise type in her late twenties and her friend Carly, who is a tech genius. Together, they rescue dogs from dangerous situations, with help from Carly’s vet husband, Benji. They’re well intentioned, but a bit rag tag and pretty casual about breaking the law. When there’s a spate of local dog thefts, it’s clear they need more help and they decide to recruit the younger, naïve Suzanne, who is Benji’s cousin. Tensions flare and the deeper they investigate, the more dangerous things get. It’s a fast-paced read and definitely not boring!

Tell us about your dog/s and something unique or amusing about them.

‘Puppies for Sale’ is dedicated to my much-missed rescue dog, Chewie. My husband and I adopted him when he was eighteen months old and he lived till he was fifteen. He only passed away late last year and we were so lucky to have him in our lives. He adored helping us in the garden and paddling in water during the summer months. Most of all he just loved to be around us, whatever we were doing and we miss our little shadow very much. He was a lab/collie cross, so very intelligent, but able to shake off any mishaps easily. His favourite place in later years was the couch!
