Interview with author of paws

WooftasticBooks welcomes children’s author Kate Foster.

What inspired you to write Paws?

A number of things, but mainly the incredible bond between my youngest son and one of my dogs. They are best friends, inseparable, and totally in-tune with one another. I’m a dog lover, and have been all my life, and I can never quite process just how amazing and loyal dogs are. I spend way too much time reading stories about heroic dog rescues!

Give us a brief description of your book.

Everything is changing for 11-year-old Alex and, as an autistic person, change can be terrifying. With the first day of high school only a couple of months away, Alex is sure that having a friend by his side will help. So, he’s devised a plan – impress the kids at school by winning a trophy at the PAWS Dog Show with his trusty sidekick, Kevin. This should be a walk in the park . . . right?

What was the biggest challenge you had writing your book?

I think, being ready. I had the story, or at least most of the scenes and characters, with me for some time, but I never felt quite ready to draft the entire thing. I think I needed to be in the right place emotionally, and I guess mature enough to understand and recognize the heart of the story and why I had to write it.

What’s next for you, writing-wise?

Well, lots of fun stuff! 2022 is going to be PAWSOME, so watch this space. But, in the meantime, until I run out of ideas or people get bored of me, I’ll be writing loads more middle grade and chapter books with sweet kids, kind acts, and all the dogs!

Tell us about your own dogs —their names, breeds and something unique or amusing about them.

I have two dogs (at the moment!): one spoodle called Claude and a cavoodle called Ian. Claude is a second-hand dog and Ian third-hand, which astonishes me how their previous owners didn’t want them since they are the most gorgeous of pooches. They both love company and follow me everywhere, even to the bathroom. They are perfect with children, super lazy, and love all the pats. Ian is exceptionally clumsy and Claude does not like sharing anything!
